What do you think when you watch “Outer and Inner Space”(1966) by Andy Warhol?
Everyone is free to think about. I suggest, watching it, to think about and to make questions and to relate words to explain this short.
To me suggest words as:
Geniality
Brilliant
Original
It’s 1966.
No web, No data, No programs, No informatics knowledge.
And in this visual, they are born questions as:
“Which techniques has used?”.
“What is expensive to produce it?”.
“Is it a dialog?” Who is who?”.
“What she says?”.
“Is she acting?”.
“What she talks about? ”.
“Have you seen the space?”.
“Why the effect is so strong, distorted?”.
“Is it real?”.
First sensation is curiosity; the second sensation is attention on the short; the third sensation, the short is hypnotic.
You look the global with attention. The short go fast, with immediacy, without break. Sound goes until don’t let you think too much.Create suggestions with a strong attention, as hypnotic visual animated with a pseudo monolog and sound.
Why?
Watching it, I started relate this work (watched only once years ago) to enter into the heart of concept of art’s video. In the Video, one the most important work made by Andy Warhol, there is a big distinction between film, tape while and the sounds voices emissions in the real-time recording and responses.
Why this video has taken my attention and no one from Laurie Anderson for example (sounds, video or music and video)?
Because, perhaps, we forget what it means to do video art.
I don’t want enter on the subject of Andy Warhol’s video and all of the Warhol’s work (who is interested can search on the net), but what is taken, quoting Andy Warhol, it is the idea itself of making video and what it given me to watching it. Just look around on various videos channels or Networks, I realized what the word Video art is also used improperly, perhaps much exaggerated, to indicate a thousand combinations of art, where the art is not there.
I address the few cases seen on the Youtube channels or stumbled upon by chance.
Without making names or nicknames, but analyzing some of them, seeing them in the shoes of someone than do not understand art, I formulate these questions:
“But what is it?“
“ What it represents me”
Being me a person very critical in everything I do, I realized how much material is dumped into the audiovisual channels web; there is not a great choice of writers capable than can give the same effect or the same geniality Warhol. We are in 21st century; we live in the world’s progress on the net, with the net, with informatics knowledge, PC, data, programs. We don’t have distance, no heavy and expensive material to produce something; we use mechanism simple to create.
I’m not talking about David Hall, Gregory Markopoulos, Georges Melies, Nam June Paik, Edwin Porter, and all Andy Warhol’s work, or who come later or emerging now.
What I mean.
I mean than in the chaos of a series of media on the web, suggesting that anyone can say “Video art”, but few know how to put it in practical. Going to an exhibition/conference few months ago, I remember critiques to a group, almost famous and the most apt criticism done from an operator in the entertainment industry. Re-reading and remembering the words spoken there, and the statements made on a video, (I personally never have seen), made me think that perhaps, at times, there is not a ‘highly critical work’ made, the criticality than everyone must make when produce creativity.
Creativity/Criticality. Two words walk together, in the same line in the production in positive and negative or destructive.
The idea on criticality in the production, the idea on a video, must be one of the points of emergence, strength capable of improving on that we want represent. Important vision of the global work, statement to be broken, question than we must not have, law to follow, eye in the project and negative answer must not be said. I’m not talking about the systems, used in producing them in standard communication techniques; I’m talking about the idea that moves from concept to being a visual object.
For ex. In a famous book, Louis Kahn write about the concept on project/idea when a student, dreaming in a night his project, ask to Louis Kahn what he think about dream and real ideas concept.
Anyone can take any digital camera and go around any time, take frame, recording conversations and all sounds than can make a big city for example, or colors, if is to allow an exterior. But when we have an interior, or make something that does not exist in reality, we referee to ideas forms congenial or mixing up, where the object to produce should be taken into account, with a strong power visual effect, to remind to the success.
The idea is to represent both imagined than real, it must be able to make a hypnotic effect, attention, curiosity, originality, brilliantly, and not tied or doubt.
If is the object is related to development it is tied to any system of representation, the basic idea must be certificated.
In conclusion, I believe that having a basic idea with an explanation, can or cannot be sent only that information itself, helps the video. The global imagine is create to give me something or ispire me somthing and must be relate to the principal idea than we have to create a product.
